Edith Kerrison Nursery School and Children’s Centre will work together with you to give your child the best start in life through nurturing their well-being and enabling them to become confident, creative and resilient learners.

We are located in Custom House where we have been established as a state-maintained nursery school for over 90 years and our Children’s Centre is the lead centre for Custom House and Canning Town. Some of our families bring East End traditions to Edith Kerrison, whilst others bring global experiences. We believe together we are a stronger community.

We have a talented multi-disciplinary team of teachers, educators, outreach and family support workers to help our community on its learning journey. We work in partnership with other professionals including speech therapists, health visitors, nutritionists, special needs workers and return-to-work officers.

We want to make a difference together to ensure your child’s time here is a happy and successful one.

Best wishes

Admissions at a glance

The admissions process for children aged two, three, and four can be initiated at the reception of Edith Kerrison Nursery School and Children’s Centre.

If you are looking for a nursery place for your child, please register at the school reception. Download our Registration Form.

The information about childcare and education options is provided by Newham Council.

When can my child start nursery?

Children who are two years old are usually offered a place to start after they turn two. Two-year-olds must attend some children’s centre sessions and may have a home visit. If there are no available places, you can put your child’s name on our waiting list or register them with other childcare providers.

Am I eligible for 15 hours?

Children three years old are usually allowed to start the term after their third birthday. Before the starting date, they must attend pre-school play sessions with their parent. During these sessions, parents have the chance to meet with the Head Teacher. At least one parent must attend one of these sessions before a starting date is offered.

Universal 15 hours entitlement

Did you know the 15-hour placements have expanded?

We provide 30-hour placements for up to 18 eligible families. Priority is given to children who have accepted a 15-hour placement. The Department for Education establishes the criteria for eligibility.

Am I eligible for 30 hours?

History

The nursery school was established in 1930 by Edith Kerrison, the first woman to serve on the West Ham council and a dedicated advocate for women and children’s welfare.

In 2008, a children’s centre was constructed next to the nursery school, expanding support for local families with young children. Additionally, a further extension was added to the Children’s Centre in 2017 to enhance our provision for two-year-olds.

A plaque commemorating Edith Kerrison can be found in Stratford.
